There are several options for disposing of unwanted or expired prescription drugs to help people reduce their impact on the environment, as well as reduce potential health risks.

The best way is to take them back to your local pharmacy for safe disposal. Many pharmacies offer free collection or take-back services, or they may accept return mail packages. Additionally, some pharmacies have a drop-box for unused drugs.

Another option is to contact your local government or law enforcement agency to identify local resources for safe disposal. Alternatively, some community organizations or hazardous waste disposal companies may also offer authorized collection events. Finally, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration sponsors National Prescription Drug Take Back days throughout the year, and hosts collection sites for citizens to safely and securely dispose of their unused prescription drugs.
